Chicago – The U.S. Supreme court is preparing to hear arguments Tuesday on Chicago’s handgun ban.

At issue in the case is the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

Mayor Daley is a strong supporter of the handgun ban, and spoke in favor of it Monday at Chicago Police Headquarters.

He and other advocates said that more guns mean more crime, and that they hope the Supreme Court will decided the Second Amendment only applies to federal enclaves, like Washington D.C.

Opponents of the ban say that the Second Amendment gives them the right to keep guns.

Daley says reasonable limitations should be allowed.

“We all know the unfortunate facts. In one year on average more than 100,000 people in America are shot, and many are killed or seriously injured with a gun. These are Americans of all backgrounds, from every part of our nation, big cities, small, rural and urban areas. If reasonable local laws could have prevented even one of these needless deaths or injuries, it would have been important,” Daley said.

The plaintiff in the case is a Chicagoan who says he should be allowed to keep guns in his home for his defense

Arguments are Tuesday, but a ruling in the case is not expected until later this year.
