Safe Surrender Program

The US Marshall’s have created the Fugitive Safe Surrender Program. This initiative encourages persons wanted for non-violent felony or misdemeanor crimes to voluntarily surrender to the law in faith-based or other neutral settings. Already successful in many states, this Chicago Attorney hopes that they bring the program here to Cook County sometime soon.

I initially learned of the program by reading this article in the Chicago Tribune.

This would be a fantastic way for the Cook County Judicial System to clear the countless thousands of outstanding warrants that are issued daily in the municipal courtrooms for non-violent offenses. In many cases, the Officers or Complaining Witnesses are no longer available to testify, which makes the warrants easier to quash and dispose of, making room for more serious crimes to be prosecuted effectively. Given the countless numbers of people living in constant fear of being arrested on these outstanding warrants, I am surprised that Chicago hasn’t been chosen as a host city.  You can be sure that when it does, I’ll be posting about it here.
